ACM Convert
Compress .wav files
The BSI ACM Convert utility will compress Linear PCM .wav files, preserving embedded information such as Title, Artist, Intro
and Segue Markers etc. (While other batch conversion utilities are available, these typically strip out the embedded BSI information
as these applications are unaware of the additional data embedded within the file and / or do not create a compressed audio
file that can store this information. This BSI utility ensures you do not lose that information and creates a file that is compatible
with other BSI software).
This utility requires the relevant Cyberlink (for MP3) or QDesign (for MPEG Layer 2) codecs which are available from BSI. While
ADPCM conversion is supported natively via Windows ACM, we no longer recommend this format as a broadcast option.
Quality
- Using the QDesign ACM codec, encoding at MPEG Layer 2, 256Kbps, transparent audio quality can be achieved
- Using the Cyblerink ACM codec, encoding at MP3, 128Kbps, file sizes are 1/10th of the original .wav file
Both resultant files can be transferred to external USB drives and used by remote talent for Voice-Tracking, or in the case of
MPEG Layer 2 files, for most broadcast applications too. (HD Radio doesn't support the use of any compressed file formats).
While our recommendation is always to use the highest quality, uncompressed Linear .wav files, this utility offers conversion
to smaller sized files if required while preserving embedded BSI information.
